Coppell Football closed the regular season with a dramatic fourth-quarter finish Thursday night, scoring 28 unanswered points to defeat Plano East 48-15 at Buddy Echols Field and secure the top Class 6A Division I playoff seed from District 7-6A.
The Cowboys improved to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in district play, finishing second in the district standings. The victory also extended Coppell's winning streak to three games heading into the UIL playoffs.
Despite the final margin, the outcome remained in doubt deep into the fourth quarter.
Plano East, which had already clinched its first playoff appearance since 2023, narrowed Coppell's lead to 20-15 with 10:13 remaining after running back Treyce Seldon scored from three yards out. With postseason positioning at stake, the Cowboys faced a five-point game against a determined Panthers team.
Coppell responded when it mattered most.
Facing third-and-14 on a critical fourth-quarter possession, quarterback Carter Zingelmann connected with senior Ishan Mair for a 15-yard completion to extend the drive. Four plays later, senior running back Jayden George scored from two yards out, giving Coppell a 27-15 advantage and beginning a scoring surge that would put the game out of reach.
The Cowboys' defense took over from there.
Daylon Montgomery intercepted a pass to give Coppell another possession in Plano East territory. George capitalized with his second rushing touchdown of the night, an eight-yard run that extended the lead to 34-15.
Zingelmann later connected with Jackson Echols for a 26-yard touchdown, pushing Coppell's advantage to 41-15.
Then came the play that put an unforgettable exclamation point on the regular season.
On the final play of the game, junior defensive back Anthony Lewis intercepted a pass near his own goal line and raced the length of the field for a 98-yard touchdown. What began as one final defensive stand became a spectacular scoring play, sending the Cowboys into the postseason with a 48-15 victory.
Lewis finished with two interceptions, while Jaden Bibbs and Montgomery also recorded interceptions as Coppell's secondary repeatedly disrupted the Plano East passing attack.
The defensive performance was particularly impressive against Panthers quarterback Josh Gordon, who entered the contest having thrown just three interceptions during the season.
Sophomore Brody Mitchell led Coppell with seven tackles, including a sack and a tackle for loss. Senior Lucas Campbell added five tackles and a tackle for loss, while Isaiah Witherspoon contributed five tackles and a fumble recovery.
Offensively, Zingelmann continued his strong late-season play, completing 19 of 24 passes for 304 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. He also led Coppell's rushing attack with 85 yards on 10 carries, finishing with 389 yards of total offense.
Echols led the receiving corps with seven catches for 89 yards and two touchdowns, including a 46-yard score in the first quarter that gave Coppell a 7-3 lead.
Jacob Anene added two receptions for 92 yards, highlighted by a 60-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Corson Lindley contributed 46 receiving yards, while tight end Evan Macken added three catches for 31 yards.
George finished with 54 rushing yards and two touchdowns, providing the Cowboys with crucial production near the goal line.
Kicker Caden Mechsner also played an important role, connecting on both field goal attempts, including a 35-yarder, and making all six extra points.
Coppell's victory followed a challenging first half in which offensive mistakes and a blocked punt helped Plano East remain within striking distance. The Cowboys led 10-3 at halftime before the Panthers cut the deficit to 10-9 early in the third quarter.
But the Cowboys continued to execute in key situations, eventually taking control with their explosive fourth-quarter finish.
Beyond the action on the field, the final home game delivered an atmosphere that will be remembered long after the season ends.
Throughout the night, Coppell's student section filled the air with clouds of baby powder, creating a distinctive scene under the stadium lights. The powder drifted above the stands as students cheered on the Cowboys, turning a school tradition into one of the evening's most memorable sights.
It was the kind of night that defines the high school football experience: a packed student section celebrating together, a playoff-bound team delivering a thrilling finish and a nearly 100-yard interception return to close the regular season.
The Cowboys enter the postseason having scored 161 points over their final three regular-season games, including victories over Plano West, Richardson and Plano East.
After Wiley earned his 50th victory as Coppell's head coach against Richardson the previous week, Thursday's win added another accomplishment to a season that has featured school records, individual milestones and a return to the playoffs.
With an 8-2 record, three consecutive victories and the district's top Division I seed secured, Coppell advances to the UIL Class 6A Division I Bi-District playoffs. The Cowboys will face South Grand Prairie on Friday, November 13, at 7 p.m. at Mustang-Panther Stadium in Grapevine.
